If my position is that we need to pass the regional transit funding measure in the Bay area then I might say:

What do you think of the regional transit funding measure? Seems like it'd be a real disaster if BART stops running at 9PM.

In that way you're signaling your support and they'll probably just continue the conversation in the same direction.

That's absolutely horrifying...

Relatively small increases in speed dramatically increase the stopping distance and as such the danger of driving. Especially with a huge truck like that. That's why Amsterdam (with much more food traffic) has recently reduced speed limits a lot.

> At 30km/h, the stopping distance of a car is 13 metres. At 50km/h it’s more than double at 27 metres. That 20km/h reduction is the crucial difference between a pedestrian or cyclist surviving the impact of an accident – at 30km/h it’s estimated that 95 per cent of pedestrians would emerge relatively unscathed.

What you're saying is all true, but typically road design influence driving speed more than anything. Changing speed limits rarely has an impact on that (at least in the US).

Not sure, but I think that in the Netherlands a municipality is not allowed to slap some 30kmh road signs along a roadway and call it a day. If the street does not 'communicate' that it is designed for that velocity, i.e. it is too broad, too many car lanes, then it must be adapted first to slow down traffic. There are a number of interesting design guidelines and manuals on the web, like CROW [0] for bicycle traffic, applied across the Netherlands.

That's how it should work but the UK definitely doesn't do that. I don't think the US does either.

One thing that may also help: an Amsterdam local told me that virtually all drivers there (and their parents/kids) are cyclists _also_, and so have more empathy for bikes and tend to operate motor vehicles safely them.

Really you should do both. Otherwise you do end up with roads that feel like you have to go slow but nominally you're allowed to go fast (and some drivers will certainly take that opportunity).

So you’re consistent in your defense of victimless crimes, yes? If he was shooting heroin in his off hours, you’re ok with that? If he’s smuggling drugs regularly, you’re ok with that? If he’s engaging in prostitution, you’re ok with that?

Just want to be sure you have a logically consistent position here.

Did he harm anyone? Nope. Everyone differs. Someone can drive as a drunkard, some not.

Rules put people on equal footing, while they are vastly different entities. Just like in school. Whats good for some children are not good at all for talented ones.

So, what are you babbling about?

You are right. Why drive at a speed where you can merely maim someone when you can drive at a speed that will inevitably explode them like a grape between the fingers instead? After all, no accidents. Yet.

After 500+ speedings? He is a good driver, that's all.

You should add some screenshots to the readme or somewhere before a sign in screen.

Sounds like a great tool though. How much is the hosted version?

Yes, we should. Will do that today

There are screenshots in the link[1] provided in the README.md

A Docker image would be good too.

We added some screenshots to the repository now. Thanks so much for the suggestion!

Have you tried Ente.io and have any thoughts on comparison? I only use ente and have been happy with it but hear many good things about immich. Does it support E2EE?

I used Ente, switched to immich just recently. Overall immich gives more of a quality feeling, has much more community support as well and a clear roadmap. I also think it will eventually receive nice, native apps for all platforms with the support of sizeable community. E2EE in Ente was nice but that's pretty much its only advantage.

Immich is self hosted only so it doesn’t really need e2ee since you can just encrypt the disk of the server. It also runs a load of on server machine learning stuff for automatic people tagging and search.

Ente is selfhosted (also has a hosted version) but encourages family use so I think that's why they do E2EE. It also does all the ML on the client side for people tagging and search.

Mozilla backed it with a grant but that was a few years ago.

Just today I helped co-host the SF Permacomputing Club.

It was a lot of fun and I love all the good energy people bring to the conversation about long lasting and community driven tech.

Money is great, and they're also looking for volunteers all the time to help out with Open Library. The website is constantly under attack from DDoS, and we're always improving, but it's a long road. I'm just a volunteer, but a very active one.

Money is great, and they're also looking for volunteers all the time to help out with Open Library.

I made a good-faith effort at searching the site for anything requesting volunteer work, and came up empty. Got a pointer? What are they looking for?

https://openlibrary.org/volunteer is the general page but I'm assuming you want the technical stuff so https://github.com/internetarchive/openlibrary/blob/master/C...

I'm a very active volunteer and can always use the help of folks that have tech experience already. We get lots of student volunteers that require a lot of work to shepherd. As such, issues tend to be claimed pretty fast but also medium sized ones don't always get through the finish line.

Anyway, if you're seriously willing to commit some time you can tag me on their slack/github (@raybb). I'm currently doing a lot of performance related work (primarily migrating their codebase to fastapi) and I could use help but don't always open issues for it because sometimes guiding a non-experienced person is more work than just doing it.

There's also quite some design work going on to move things into the modern age and more reliable. One small thing that comes to mind is getting rid of jquery where it's used casually (not where a library depends on it). We have a few files like that.

Happy to chat more with anyone who is seriously willing to spend time to tackle medium sized issues with a few rounds of feedback!

What kind of volunteering is needed?

Jeeze, what’s the motivation to DDoS a service like this?

I will speculate the DDOS attacks are funded by companies and governments that benefit from not being held accountable for their past deeds. I suspect X, Google, China, PRNK, Hungary, etc

Could it just be insanely intense nonstop crawling? I've seen it on some other sites.

It can be that but sometimes it's nonsense queries being spammed from many IP addresses too.

Do any of the apps support taking actions as you talk without having to hit stop?

Like telling it to edit the text or remove a word.

Would also like to know how it compares to https://github.com/openwhispr/openwhispr

I like that openwhisper lets me do on device and set a remote provider.

I had been using Hidden Bar but gonna give Thaw a shot now. Looks a bit more full featured and under active development!

This is pretty because Grist can react to changes in your data automatically, sending emails or firing webhooks. I only recently learned about grist and have been playing with it a bit in the hosted version. Thinking of adding it to my list of applications to run soon. Do people prefer something else?
